At the end of January, Friends of Feline's staff and furry residents all huddled in one small room for one happy reason. They bought a brand new floor for their center with a $5,000 Shelter+ Challenge grant.
“While the floor is being done in the main area, we are all squished here into the front office! All the cats, kittens, volunteers!” wrote Jacci Moss, Friends of Feline director. “Thank goodness the weather has been good. We've been able to open up the cat's outdoor porch enclosure that's connected to the front office. This gives the cats quite a bit more room. We are learning this week, while the floor is being put in, how to live in much closer quarters! But, we're a positive group and this too shall pass.”
Although located in Defiance, Ohio, the rescue center has fans around the world who voted them into first place in the final round of The Animal Rescue Site’s 2011 Shelter+ Challenge. One of the ways that the group won international support was their candid cat camera.
“We’ve had approximately 1.9 million total views,” said Moss. “We make our webcam personalized so the viewers feel a part of what we do here in the rescue center. Many of the viewers know all the cats and kittens that are here by name.”
Moss never expected that type of response when a volunteer suggested setting up a webcam. “At first, I said no. After being asked again, I decided to give it a try,” she said. “We have viewers from all over the world and so enjoy it. The volunteers and I chit chat with the viewers many times a day. They've become like an extension of our rescue family! We love our rescue, our volunteers and our viewers!”
